Rat Breeding - Selecting Mates

This is the process we use for selecting breeding partners for our rats.

Step 1: First we use grid paper, draw a grid on lined paper or use the computer.

Step 2: Write the names of our females along the side and our males along the top.

Step 3: Next too their names include their genotype, for females you may wish to include age.

Step 4: Match up boxes across and down and "X" out those breeding you do not wish to happen based on personal preference, line breedings you don't want to use, and qualities the pairs would not exhibit well together.

Step 5: Write in the corresponding boxes the genotype of the proposed progeny. You will need to know basic genetics.

Step 6: Choose your preferred progeny type and circle your choice.
